DeLand teen struck and killed while riding scooter

Jul 01, 2025Jul 01, 2025

A 15-year-old girl who was hit by a car while riding an electric scooter in DeLand has died, according to family members.

Family and friends gathered over the weekend to honor the life of Gabrielle McCaskill, who they described as full of light and ambition.

“I’m still in shock and disbelief,” said her mother, Lauren King. “She was the perfect child— I don’t understand.”

McCaskill, who lived in Atlanta with her mother, was spending the summer in DeLand with her father.

Deland police say she was hit by a car last Monday while attempting to cross South Woodland Boulevard and Gilbert Street on an e-scooter. Police said the driver, an adult male, driving a black Chevrolet, remained at the scene.

Her family said Gabrielle was fighting for her life and died several days later at the hospital.

“It’s a kind of pain no parent should ever have to go through,” King said. “I’m just glad I got to spend the most amazing 15 years with her.”

Gabrielle’s family described her as athletic, driven and full of joy. She played volleyball and soccer and loved to dance. She dreamed of going to college and becoming a dentist.

“I never in a million years thought I’d lose my 15-year-old,” said her father, Fred. “This has never happened in our family. Ever.”

Her cousin, Monica Holgate, said Gabrielle was “a beautiful light” and someone the family will always miss.

“We’re just trying to wrap our brains around this,” King added. “The impact she made from DeLand to Orlando to Atlanta—it’s crazy.”

Despite their grief, Gabrielle’s father said he harbors no anger toward the driver.

“There aren’t no ill feelings,” Fred said. “We don’t hold you responsible. We’re not mad at you. We’re not upset.”

He added, “Just keep her name alive—Forever 15, Gabby.”

DeLand police say the crash remains under investigation, and a full report will be released when it’s complete.
