Apex community holds candlelight vigil for child killed in scooter accident

Apr 30, 2023Apr 30, 2023

Apex community gathers for a candlelight vigil Friday evening to remember the life of a 10-year-old boy killed in a scooter accident.

About 100 people attended the event, including the mayor of Apex.

The vigil was filled with song, prayer, and tears as people honored 10-year-old Ayaan Vachery, who touched many lives.

"We're just trying to understand while also providing some support to the family," said Jacques Gilbert, Apex Mayor.

Vachery was a fourth-grade student at Combs Magnet Elementary School in Raleigh.

"I didn't have the opportunity to meet Aayan, but what I've heard is that he was quite the connector, and he was a little mayor himself," said Gilbert.

Gilbert says he heard beautiful stories about how Vachery was able to reach out to different kids and adults and was truly a fine young man.

"Losing him in our community is quite terrible," said Gilbert.

Vachery was riding his scooter in his neighborhood on Monday when he was hit by a car and died from his injuries at the hospital.

Mayor Gilbert talks about how big the turnout was for the event.

"I think it shows who we are," he said. "When we have a tragic situation like this, we're such a connected community."

The driver of the car was not injured and there is no word yet on if any charges will be filed.
